Making A Way For Subsistence Farmers in Africa

Poultry Production

WayMaker believe it important for subsistnace farmers not to put all their eggs in one basket as it were. If possible it is really important to diversify and broaden the farmers’ products by adding the sale of chickens to the sale of maze etc.

This is achieved by selling and rearing chickens as part of a cooperative, which then generates additional flow of cash to supplement their subsistence farming.

How it Works

This works by creating a cooperative of 9 people. Each investing $500.

It takes 8 weeks to mature say old chicks ready for sale. With one of the 9 cooperative members solely responsible for selling the mature chickens every week the other 8 people each rear a number of chicks on an 8 week cycle with each persons cycle 1 week behind the other. Thus, every week one of the 8 has mature chicks ready for sale.

With the sales person taking a pre-agreed percentage of sales the individual cooperative member then takes the remainder of that weeks sales. That money is then divided into salary/profit, a small repayment of the start up $500, and reinvestment into more day old chicks and the feed needed to rear them to maturity in 8 weeks. And so the cycle continues.

Thus after 12 months the individual has their initial capital of $500 back (or has repaid any loan or Grant used), they have received an income every 2 months for the year, and has an ongoing and sustainable business going forward.

WayMaker Micro Grants

WayMaker Africa is committed to making a way where there is no way. It recognises that for many in Africa, start-up costs usually prevent hardworking people from becoming self-sufficient.

WayMaker Africa has created a scheme whereby individuals can apply for a WayMaker Micro Grant that is repaid over the first year as part of an agreed and shared business plan.

Generally, the WayMaker Micro Grant is for the Kwacha equivalent of $500 and covers the start-up costs of an individual in a cooperative of 8 people.

Exceptionally, Waymaker may provide a grant of $4,500 for an entire cooperative to begin but this would be subject to much stricter terms and conditions than a single individual.
