DaySpring Academy Secondary School

Making A Way For Children in Africa

The Shocking Truth

32.5% OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN DON’T MAKE IT TO SECONDARY SCHOOL

Only 67.5% of Primary School children make it to secondary school mainly because of a lack of places. (Source: UNICEF)

73% OF GIRLS WHO START SECONDARY SCHOOL NEVER GRADUATE

Only 27% of girls finish upper secondary school, and among the poorest children this falls to 3%. (Source: UNICEF)

Building on Success

Following the amazing success of the DaySpring preschool and primary school, it seems incredible that more than over 30% of those graduating will not find a place in a secondary school for no other reason than a lack of places!

Half of their students are girls and statistics suggest that 70% of them will not finish their secondary education. This tends to be because over 58% of Zambians live on less than $2 per day and school costs become prohibitive.

We want to extend the incredible success of this school which makes a way for these orphans and forgotten children by building a secondary school where places are guaranteed, and money is not the deciding factor.

The primary school is excelling with 100% of year 7 students passing their end-of-year mock exams (The School year in Zambia is January to December). 100% of the students received a grade 1 in Mathematics, 87.5% gained a grade 1 in English and the remaining 2.5% received a grade 2. We are excited to see the sciences improve as the secondary school will have science labs which will benefit the primary school.

"DaySpring Academy has had an incredible impact in our community"
Binwell Mpundu
Elected Member of Parliament for Kitwe
“In our constituency we have more primary schools than secondary which makes it a challenge to access secondary schools in the district. I would like to recommend DaySpring Academy consider upgrading to a secondary school in order to help in decongesting existing secondary schools in the constituency”.

Community Leaders

Our track record and experience with preschool and primary school projects put us in the ideal position to oversee a project of this significance and magnitude.

Andy, WayMaker’s Founder, and our Partners DaySpring are well connected with the Ministry of Education, the local Mayor, the elected Member of Parliament, and other community leaders in Kitwe.

The local government have been so impressed with the success of the school and our desire for a secondary school that they have donated a huge piece of land for a sports and recreation area on the other side of the street.

Plans For A New Secondary School

Our partners have recommissioned the architects and quantity surveyors we successfully partnered with for the DaySpring Academy to design and cost the secondary school which will reside on the same site as the pre and primary schools.

“The school is registered with the Ministry of Education and since its inception in 2018 DaySpring Academy has maintained high standards. It is our recommendation to expand the school up to the secondary level to offer continuity to the learners.”
Chris Nyungila
District Education Board Secretary

The Costs

The complete build costs given by the architects and quantity surveyors is K3,100,000.

This has been split into two Phases. The first phase, the ground floor, costs K1,600,000 and WayMaker was pleased to announce that 100% of the funding for that has been raised by WayMaker UK and so work was able to begin at the start of December 2022.

Fundraising in the UK continues and WayMaker UK has already raised 25% of the remaining K1,500,000 needed
